Testing is a quintessential Programme in reaching educational goal. Bachman says, "In the context of research, the interpretation of test results is of both theoretical and applied interest; such interpretations can assist in our understanding of the nature of language proficiency, and may have implications for language learning and language teaching."

The central focus of the present study is on testing in the teaching-learning process designed to enhance English language ability2 of class IX second language learners under West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Two propositions prompted this study. First, better teaching and better learning can only be accessed from the
'feedback' through testing. Second, better testing promotes better teaching and learning. In West Bengal very little interest has been found in designing tests to provide
'feedback' for better teaching and better learning. The chief concern of this study, therefore, is to evolve out a better test design.

This book develops in the following process: examination3 of the teaching• learning process in six schools of West Bengal in order to confirm the researcher's goal, discussion on a relevant theoretical background, framing of tasks for administration in the target class chosen for the research, application and interpretation of the tasks, and a conclusion that substantiates the propositions and offers suggestions of the study.
